Broome Skate Park is officially open!

Broome’s new $1.5million skatepark at the Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre has officially opened with a two-day festival featuring pro skaters, entertainment, and interactive coaching for all abilities.

SKATE kicked off on Friday September 30 and offered an engaging skate experience featuring professionals from Beyond Skate and Freestyle Now on skateboards, scooters and BMX, and local skaters and musicians keeping the crowd entertained throughout.

The Skate Park is located at the front of the Broome Recreation & Aquatic Centre on Cable Beach Road. Entry is free and consists of beginner-intermediate ramps, grind rails and slopes, shaded seating areas and flood lighting.

The community enjoyed the opportunity to learn form the experts with a series of skate, scooter and BMX clinics designed to develop skills at all levels.

Feedback from the Broome community went into the final skatepark design, with over 200 responses received during the public submission period in 2020 – with about 61 per cent coming from people aged 22 or younger.

Shire of Broome president Harold Tracey said the new skatepark was an invaluable community asset that would be loved by Broome’s youth.

“This project has a lot of community buy-in, and it will be great to see the younger community members attend this event,” he said.

“As indicated in our recent Community Scorecard results from June 2022, youth services and facilities were highlighted as one of the Shire’s key priorities and our new skatepark and launch event facilitates this.

“The Shire has invested heavily into sporting infrastructure in recent years and our amenities locally are now as good as any across regional Western Australia.

“I’d like to say a big thank you to AusSport, Lotterywest and the State Government for their ongoing financial support in this project.”

The new Broome Skatepark located on Cable Beach Road East is funded by the Shire of Broome and Lotterywest and designed by award-winning skatepark designers Convic in partnership with local people.
