Fitzroy Crossing

Fitzroy Crossing is on the Great Northern Highway, 391 kilometres east of Broome and 647 kilometres west of Kununurra. Fitzroy Crossing is one of only two towns along the over 1000 km stretch of highway between Broome and Kununurra. Fitzroy Crossing is a welcoming town and is home to five First Nations language groups. Art and Aboriginal culture are important here, with several galleries open to tourists to buy locally produced artworks.

The new bridge was built in the 70s, so there is the new town and many tourists are intrigued by the old townsite. There are lots of historical places to see such as the old Crossing Inn, Pioneer Cemetery, Old Townsite, Old Fitzroy Crossing Post Office, Police Station Group and the old concrete crossing.

Fitzroy Crossing to Windjana Gorge

Take a day trip from Fitzroy Crossing to explore the beauty of Dimalurru Tunnel Creek and Bandilngan Windjana Gorge. Bandilngan (Windjana Gorge) National Park is 145 kilometres (unsealed road) from Fitzroy Crossing. Bandilngan Windjana Gorge is a highly spiritual place to Bunuba people and the Wandjina are the powerful creation spirits that reside here.

A four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended to access the park, which is generally inaccessible during the wet season. Check all road conditions before you travel, or pop into the Derby Visitor Centre or Fitzroy Crossing Visitor Centre for latest updates.

Dimalurru (Tunnel Creek) is located 110km NW of Fitzroy Crossing. You need a four-wheel-drive to access the park, which is generally inaccessible during the wet season. Please see Parks and Wildlife Service for latest updates. Be croc wise at all times.

Dan͟ggu Geikie Gorge

The main highlight is the Danggu Geikie Gorge National Park, located 20 kms away and accessible by road. The gorge features steep walls where the river has cut through the Danggu Geike Range, exposing a fine section of the Devonian Reef. The road is sealed all the way from Fitzroy Crossing. It is suitable for all vehicles, trailers and caravans.
